Your Essential Leadership Role in Fort McMurray Construction

Key Responsibilities often include:

• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation, and Code, as well as all applicable federal, provincial, and client-specific standards.
• Risk Management: Conduct comprehensive hazard assessments, risk analyses, and develop effective control measures to mitigate workplace hazards.
• Incident Management: Lead and participate in serious incident investigations (root cause analysis), develop corrective actions, and track their implementation to prevent recurrence.
• Safety Training: Develop, organize, and deliver effective safety training programs and orientations for all levels of site personnel, promoting continuous learning.
• Auditing & Inspections: Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and assessments to identify non-compliance, unsafe acts/conditions, and areas for improvement.
• Safety Culture Development: Champion a proactive, positive safety culture through strong leadership, mentorship, and engagement with workers and management.
• Documentation & Reporting: Manage all safety-related documentation, maintain accurate records, and prepare detailed performance reports for internal stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
• Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency response plans, coordinate drills, and ensure readiness for all potential site emergencies.
• Stakeholder Liaison: Act as a primary contact for regulatory agencies, clients, sub-contractors, and internal project teams on all HSE matters.
• Performance Monitoring: Track and analyze key safety performance indicators (KPIs), identify trends, and develop strategies for continuous improvement.

Who We're Looking For: Your Essential Qualifications

To excel as a Safety Manager in Fort McMurray's complex and high-stakes industrial construction sector, you'll need a blend of advanced education, certifications, and extensive practical experience:

• Education: Post-secondary education (Diploma or Bachelor's Degree) in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Key Certifications (Required/Highly Preferred):
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is typically required or highly preferred for senior management roles.
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation is often a minimum requirement or strong asset, especially if CRSP is in progress.
  • Relevant industry-specific safety certifications (e.g., CSO, CRST, Standard First Aid, H2S Alive, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Ground Disturbance).
  • COR Auditor certification is an asset.
• Experience: Minimum 7-15+ years of progressive experience in Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) management roles, with at least 3-5 years in a dedicated Safety Manager or Lead position.
  • Significant experience in large-scale industrial construction, oil & gas, mining, or petrochemical projects is essential.
  • Direct experience working on project sites within the Fort McMurray region and Alberta's oil sands is highly preferred.
• Technical Proficiency:
  • Expert knowledge of Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, and Code.
  • Strong understanding of industry best practices (e.g., CSA Z1000, ISO 45001, Energy Safety Canada).
  • Proficiency with safety management software, incident reporting systems, and data analysis tools.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
• Leadership & Communication: Exceptional leadership, coaching, mentoring, and team-building skills. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to engage all levels of the organization and external stakeholders.
• Analytical & Problem-Solving: Superior analytical abilities to interpret data, identify root causes, and develop effective, sustainable solutions.

• Valid Driver's License: A valid Class 5 Driver's License with a clean abstract is essential.
