Key Responsibilities & Ensuring Electrical Integrity

Your technical skill and meticulous attention to detail will be fundamental to the seamless and safe operation of advanced industrial processes. Typical duties for an Oil Sands Industrial Electrician include:

• Installation & Wiring: Install, connect, test, and maintain various electrical systems, components, and equipment, including motors, generators, alternators, transformers, switchgear, control panels, lighting, and power distribution systems, strictly adhering to the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and site specifications.
• Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex electrical faults in industrial control systems, motor controls (e.g., VFDs, soft starters), PLC systems, and various electrical equipment using test instruments and logical fault-finding techniques.
• Preventive & Predictive Maintenance: Execute scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance programs on electrical systems and equipment to ensure optimal performance, extend asset life, and minimize unplanned downtime.
• Circuit & System Knowledge: Read and interpret complex electrical schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications to determine layout of industrial electrical equipment installations and troubleshoot issues.
• Control Systems: Work with and understand industrial control systems (DCS, PLC, HMI) to diagnose electrical issues impacting automated processes, collaborating closely with Instrumentation Technicians.
• Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and functional checks of electrical equipment and associated protection devices.
• Safety Adherence: Strictly follow all electrical safety protocols, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, permit systems, and site-specific regulations, promoting a safe work environment for yourself and others.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate records of electrical maintenance, repair, and installation activities, updating electrical drawings and system documentation as required.
• Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with Instrumentation Technicians, Millwrights, Operators, and Engineers to ensure integrated system functionality and swift resolution of operational issues.
• Upgrades & Modifications: Participate in electrical system upgrades, modifications, and commissioning activities for new or expanded facilities.

Who We're Looking For: Your Essential Qualifications

To excel as an Oil Sands Industrial Electrician, you'll need certified expertise, extensive practical experience, and a meticulous approach:

• Journeyperson Certification: Valid Red Seal Journeyperson Electrician certification is mandatory.
• Industry Experience: Minimum 3-5+ years of relevant experience as a certified Industrial Electrician in a heavy industrial, oil and gas, petrochemical, refining, or mining environment. Oil Sands experience is a significant asset.
• Code Knowledge: In-depth understanding and practical application of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and other relevant provincial and federal regulations.
• Technical Proficiency:
  • Expertise in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial electrical equipment (motors, transformers, switchgear, VFDs, control panels).
  • Strong knowledge of industrial control circuits, PLCs, and their electrical interfaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and single-line diagrams.
• Troubleshooting Skills: Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities to diagnose complex electrical issues quickly and effectively.
• Safety Mindset: A strong commitment to electrical safety culture and strict adherence to all safety regulations and procedures (e.g., Lockout/Tagout, arc flash safety, confined space, hot work).
• Computer Skills: Proficiency with maintenance management systems (CMMS/ERP, e.g., SAP, Maximo) and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with operators, engineers, and other trades.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physical tasks associated with the role, including working at heights, in confined spaces, lifting/carrying equipment, and standing for extended periods, often in varying weather conditions.
