- Site Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular, thorough site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for safety improvement.
- Hazard Assessment & Control: Lead and participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and develop effective control measures to mitigate identified risks.
- Incident Investigation: Lead or assist in the investigation of incidents, near misses, and hazardous occurrences, performing root cause analysis and developing robust corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Program Development & Implementation: Contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) management systems, policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to provincial (e.g., Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code) and federal legislation, industry standards, and company-specific HSE requirements.
- Training & Mentorship: Develop and deliver safety orientations, toolbox talks, training sessions, and coaching to employees, supervisors, and contractors to enhance safety awareness and competency.
- Emergency Preparedness: Support the development and implementation of emergency response plans, participate in drills, and ensure readiness for various on-site emergencies.

- Relevant Certifications:
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation from the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) or equivalent is often a minimum requirement.
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation is highly preferred and often required for senior roles.
- Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Certificate or Diploma from a recognized institution.
- Industry Experience: Minimum 3-5+ years of progressive HSE experience in heavy industrial, oil and gas, mining, or large-scale construction environments, specifically in the Oil Sands sector is a significant asset.
- Legislation Expertise: In-depth knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation (OHS Act, Regulation, and Code) and other relevant environmental regulations.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in conducting inspections, audits, incident investigations, root cause analysis (e.g., Bowtie, TapRooT), and developing safety procedures.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence, train, and engage personnel at all levels, from field workers to senior management. Strong conflict resolution abilities.
- Problem-Solving: Proven analytical and critical thinking skills to identify hazards, assess risks, and develop effective solutions.
- Computer Proficiency: Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and HSE management software.
- Proactive & Resilient: A self-motivated, proactive approach to safety, with the ability to work independently and under pressure in demanding environments.
- Valid Driver's License: A valid Class 5 Driver's License with a clean abstract is typically required.
