Your Critical Role in Fort McMurray’s Energy Efficiency
As an Insulator on Fort McMurray's active industrial construction and maintenance sites, you play a vital role in preventing heat loss/gain, controlling noise, and protecting personnel and equipment. Your precision in applying various types of thermal and acoustic insulation – including fiberglass, mineral wool, calcium silicate, and foam glass – and meticulous cladding (aluminum, stainless steel) on pipes, tanks, vessels, and ductwork ensures the operational efficiency and safety of large-scale facilities.
Key Responsibilities often include:
- Insulation Application: Measuring, cutting, fitting, and applying various types of insulation materials to pipes, fittings, valves, tanks, vessels, ductwork, boilers, and other industrial equipment.
- Cladding & Jacketing: Fabricating, fitting, and fastening protective coverings (cladding/jacketing) such as aluminum, stainless steel, or PVC over insulation using various hand and power tools.
- Material Selection: Selecting the appropriate insulation materials and fastening methods based on temperature, operating conditions, specifications, and environmental requirements.
- Removal & Repair: Safely removing old, damaged, or asbestos-containing insulation (with proper training and PPE) and replacing or repairing it.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine insulation requirements, materials, and methods.
- Firestopping: Applying fire-stopping materials to penetrations to maintain fire ratings (if trained and certified).
- Work at Heights & Confined Spaces: Safely performing duties from elevated platforms, scaffolding, or within confined spaces, strictly adhering to safety protocols.
- Tool Operation: Safely operating hand tools, power tools, cutting devices, and measuring equipment common to the trade.
- Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to all provincial (Alberta OHS), federal, company, and client safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout, and waste disposal.
- Quality Control: Inspecting completed work to ensure it meets quality standards, specifications, and provides optimal thermal/acoustic performance.
Who We're Looking For: Your Essential Qualifications
To excel as an Insulator in Fort McMurray's challenging industrial environment, you'll need specialized trade certification, extensive experience, and a strong safety background:
- Certification/Trade:
- Journeyperson Insulator (Thermal Insulator) certification recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training is highly valued and often required.
- Red Seal endorsement is highly preferred and a significant asset, demonstrating national standard proficiency.
- Common Safety Orientation (CSO) or CSTS-2020 (Construction Safety Training System).

- Experience: Minimum of 3-7+ years of demonstrable experience as a certified Insulator on large-scale industrial construction, maintenance, or turnaround projects. Direct experience in the Fort McMurray oil sands region is highly advantageous.
- Technical Skills:
- Expert knowledge of various insulation materials, their properties, and application methods.
- Proficient in fabricating and installing metal cladding/jacketing.
- Ability to accurately measure, cut, and fit insulation around complex shapes and components.
- Strong understanding of heat loss/gain principles and vapour barrier requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and insulation specifications.
- Physical Requirements: Highly physically capable; able to lift and carry materials, kneel, bend, crouch, and work in tight or awkward positions. Comfortable working at heights and in varying outdoor weather conditions common to Northern Alberta. Must be able to wear required PPE, including respirators.
