Your Essential Role in Fort McMurray Construction

As an Estimator (Intermediate / Senior) in the Fort McMurray construction sector, you are at the forefront of project acquisition and financial planning. You are responsible for analyzing project specifications, conducting thorough quantity take-offs, and calculating comprehensive costs to develop competitive and accurate bids. Your expertise directly impacts the success of project proposals and the financial viability of future endeavors.

Key Responsibilities often include:

• Bid Preparation: Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates for various construction projects (e.g., industrial, commercial, civil, heavy-haul).
• Scope Analysis: Review and interpret blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to determine the scope of work and required contents of the estimate.
• Quantity Take-offs: Perform detailed quantity take-offs for all project components (labor, materials, equipment, subcontracts, and other direct costs).
• Cost Analysis: Analyze and determine various costs, including labor rates, material prices, equipment usage, overhead, and profit margins.
• Vendor & Subcontractor Engagement: Solicit and evaluate quotations from vendors and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and scope coverage.
• Risk Assessment: Identify potential risks, opportunities, and special conditions associated with projects and incorporate them into estimates.
• Database Management: Maintain and update estimating databases with current pricing, historical data, and production rates.
• Collaboration: Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Superintendents, and procurement teams to develop comprehensive and viable proposals.
• Value Engineering: Identify opportunities for cost savings or value enhancement through alternative methods or materials.
• Presentation: Prepare and present detailed estimates and proposals to senior management for review and approval.

Who We're Looking For: Your Essential Qualifications

To excel as an Estimator (Intermediate / Senior) in the complex and competitive Fort McMurray construction environment, you'll need strong analytical skills and significant estimating experience:

• Education: A Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a related technical field is typically required.
• Experience:
  • Intermediate: Minimum 3-7 years of direct estimating experience in heavy industrial, commercial, or institutional construction.
  • Senior: Minimum 7-15+ years of progressive estimating experience on large-scale industrial, commercial, or heavy civil construction projects.
  • Direct experience in the Fort McMurray region or Alberta's oil sands is highly preferred.
• Software Proficiency:
  • Expert-level proficiency with industry-standard estimating software (e.g., Hard Dollar, B2W, HeavyBid, Sage Timberline).
  • Proficiency with digital take-off software (e.g., On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam Revu).
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel (complex formulas, financial modeling, data analysis) is essential.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP, JD Edwards) is an asset.
• Technical Skills: In-depth understanding of construction methods, materials, labor productivity rates, market conditions, and various contract types (Lump Sum, Unit Price, Cost-Plus).
• Analytical & Problem-Solving: Exceptional analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving abilities with a meticulous attention to detail and high accuracy.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively articulate estimates, negotiate with vendors, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Organizational Skills: Superior organizational, planning, and time management skills to manage multiple estimates and meet strict deadlines.
• Certifications (Asset): Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) designation, Gold Seal Certification in Estimating, or Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
• Valid Driver's License: A valid Class 5 Driver's License with a clean abstract may be required.
• Pre-Employment Screening: Ability to pass pre-employment Drug & Alcohol testing (including cannabis) and comprehensive background checks is a standard requirement for most Fort McMurray industrial sites.
